Massa

Massa, visit it together with Carrara in Tuscany, the place of a thousand colours

In the study of geography, when we study the Tuscan region, the name of: Massa Carrara, becomes unique, in the sense that it appears to be a single town. Instead, in recent years, something new is emerging. In fact, Massa is a city in its own right that is 'very close', almost attached to its 'rival' Carrara. Together they then form the province of Massa Carrara.

It is not uncommon to have two territories that are then placed side by side. This even depends on their history and the nobles who ruled them or developed strong economic power.

Having made this historical clarification, we must say that visiting Massa is surprising. It is almost reminiscent of Amalfi, because of its colouring, which is lively, and reflects certain characteristics, architecturally speaking, of the 5 Lands of Liguria.

In fact, it is also called: Massa, the city of a thousand colours.

Towns and Religious Architecture in Massa

Many people know the city of Massa for its excellent cuisine. Unfortunately, we see that there are tourists who dedicate themselves to discovering it only for a day, attracted by the many restaurants, but who then do not turn to discovering the city. This is a pity because Massa has much to offer.

Its historic centre is well preserved. The town is continually cared for in order to maintain its original colouring. Piazza degli Aranci is the main area where there are double rows of orange trees, from which it takes its name, and where there are even the Ducal Palace and the Obelisk. The latter is one of the Roman monuments that was later reconstructed. Around the obelisk are sculptures of lions and fountains.

Not far from the square is the Duomo di Massa, one of the oldest structures. Year of construction 1400, but it was not consecrated until 70 years later. The reason is an internal struggle between the local nobles and the church.

Massa is also home to the Malaspina Fortress, which was one of the most imposing constructions commissioned by the Malaspina family. The Malaspina Castle is located in the hilly part behind Massa and is part of Carrara. As we have already mentioned, the two towns are neighbouring.

Returning to Massa, you must then visit Piazza Mercurio where there is a beautiful statue of the God Mercury. This is the historical area of the city that has Romanesque origins.

Other interesting attractions are:

- Massa Walls

- Porta Martana

- Porta San Martino

- Ducal Stables

- Arch of the Saviour

- Bastion of San Sebastiano

- Pizza della Conca

- Cadetti Palace with the Diocesan Museum of Massa

There are also ancient and modern sculptures in the city that give life to the environments and characterise them.

As this is the 'city of a thousand colours', you can simply stroll through the main streets admiring the wonderful colouring of the houses and monuments. They are lively, distinctive and provide a creative environment, ideal for painters.

Massa and its Nature

Massa overlooks the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Its nature includes both sea and mountains. It is therefore possible to do many naturalistic activities. At its foot, where there is Marina di Massa, we find a splendid architectural structure, the: pallottoliere di Massa. This is a pier that allows walking and that goes several hundred metres into the sea. Nearby there is also a foam rubber playground, suitable for the little ones.

If you want to stay inland, then you can discover many mountaineering routes and perhaps visit the numerous karstic caves. A beautiful natural destination that will make you fall in love with these places is the Acquapendente waterfall. This is a natural formation into which waters have been flowing for centuries.
