Camaiore, the Land of Graffiti and Italy's Oldest Villages

Not sure what to choose for your holiday this year? All sea mountain with question then we tell you where to go! Go to Versilia in one of its most beautiful towns known as: Camaiore.

Like so many other towns in boundless Tuscany, Camaiore is also divided in two, in the sense that there is one part facing the sea and the other extending over the Apuan Alps that are part of its territory.

For lovers of the beach, the sea, diving, and the seabed, who in summer cannot do without bathing in our Mediterranean, then you must turn to the resort of: Lido di Camaiore.

While for all those who want to live this location all year round, immersed in nature, where even in winter it is possible to do recreational activities, then there is the high area of Camaiore, also known as: Casoli di Camaiore. From here we can easily reach some of the mountains that belong to this town, such as Mount Matanna, Prana and Gabberi.

Even Neanderthal man loved Versilia

The history of a place becomes part of its identity. If you look closely, it is obvious that every town, every smallest village has roots. Just think that Camaiore was one of the certified places where the famous Neanderthals arrived. In some caves, the first homes of man, discoveries were made that literally changed the history of Italic human colonisation.

In the area where the Grotta all'Onda is located, in the hamlet of Casoli di Camaiore, and in the Buca del Tasso, in Metato, another hamlet of this town, graffiti and artefacts dating back over 40,000 years have been found.

Since this discovery, further excavations have been undertaken in other nearby caves, all natural cavities such as the Tambugione, Pianacce, Tanaccio, Penna Buia and Buda del Corno. To date, excavations are still being carried out to understand the role of this locality in prehistory.

However, already the caves we have mentioned can be visited and you can also immerse yourself in a Neanderthal reality you did not know about. Apparently, prehistoric man loved this area so much that he settled here.

Are you in Camaiore? Don't miss these hamlets

There are a total of 16 villages belonging to Camaiore, considered to be: the oldest in Italy. The town, as we have mentioned, even dates back to prehistoric times. The main site, however, concerns the centre of the town. While the villages arose in the early Middle Ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire.

In Monteggiori, there is a splendid feudal castle that later gave rise to the urban structure of the hamlet and a surrounding wall. Here is one of the first control fortresses built by the nobles of the area.

At Greppolungo, there is another castle. The name of this hamlet came about because it was built against the castle. Rete as in: long rump.

We then arrive at Casoli di Camaiore, which is known as the: town of graffiti. In every alley and wall we find murals. It was in 1900 when the artist Rosario Murabito painted his work on the wall of a house. It was from this city that the famous: Street Art was born. Which today is a global phenomenon.
