Massarosa

Massarosa awaits the adventurous, nature reserves and ancient Tuscan lagoon

In Tuscany, nature is wild in places. This preserves an excellent climate and an original 'macchia mediterranea'. There are municipalities, like Massarosa, that have structured their tourism directly on natural beauty in a way that does not change it, but makes it unique.

The town of Massarosa, complete with its villages and hamlets, is ideal for the more adventurous souls who want to devote themselves to excursions or to thermal cures, sea and lakes. An area in which the environments are many and varied, but which allows for holidays at all times, in every month of the year.

In fact, we see that Massarosa itself is a popular winter destination for those who want to venture into its parks and nature reserves. In summer, however, it becomes a destination that provides refreshment amidst the thick vegetation. Massarosa also overlooks the sea, so it is possible to bathe or sunbathe.

The magical nature of Massarosa

In an unfamiliar place, one is left with the doubt of not knowing what to do and how to get around. This is why we want to give 9 reasons, 9 places, which are present in Massarosa and which are considered to be the main attractions.

The first is the famous: Oasi Massaciuccoli. A nature trail in the lake of the same name that is part of the Migliarino Natural Park. In the past, the lake was much larger, a freshwater formation derived from an ancient coastal lagoon. It has since receded, making way for the land and some lake and marshy areas. This route is wonderful, really beautiful.

Inside the park you can then visit Candalla, where there are streams and torrents running through nature, but also the: fairy hole. It is no coincidence that we said that nature is magical here in Massarosa. You can relax at the end of the day at the Massaciuccoli spa. All year round there are people who use them for thermal cures.

Then the Massaciuccoli Roman archaeological area awaits you. Like many other areas in Tuscany, this was one of the most flourishing Roman colonies. Its economy was based on wood, given the large amount of woodland. You must then be part of the adventure of Path No. 7B, the broom trail. Then we come to the eco Lake. In summer, boat trips are possible here. In addition, there is a large area for picnic meals and children's entertainment.

There is also a Shinto temple in Massarosa. It is a lakeside reconstruction of a wooden temple. A tourist attraction that you can visit and that is very suggestive, it seems to be immediately transferred to the East.

What to do and see in Massarosa and its villages

This town is not only nature, although it is wonderful. Massarosa has villages that are between the mediaeval with hints of ancient Rome. Environments that are characteristic and have interesting things to see.

The most famous villages in Massarosa are:

- Montigiano, with medieval monuments

- Stiava, here is the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Stiava

- Mommio Castello, you will find trekking area and the famous grotto

- Bargecchia, to visit the church of San Martino

- Corsanico, where you can admire the splendid church of San Michele Arcangelo

The villages can be visited entirely on foot because they are very close to each other. As for accommodation, you can even find yourself sleeping in a typical medieval house. Moreover, as far as food is concerned, you should know that Massarosa has its own typical sweet, the: pupporina, on sale in many local shops.

In its surroundings we can then easily reach Pedona, a hamlet of Camaiore, another very important town in Versilia, with interesting Renaissance monuments and a local structure that is a natural tourist attraction.

Massarosa measures only about 15km, nestling along the coast past Lago Massaciuccoli, with most of the hamlets belonging to it forming and inhabiting the first hills. These are Quiesa, Bozzano, Massarosa, Piano del Quercione, Piano di Conca, Piano di Mommio, Stiava, which already start in the lowlands, then Mommio, Corsanico, Bargecchia, Pieve a Elici, Compignano, Montigiano, Gualdo, Valpromaro e Massaciuccoli - the latter known today mainly for Puccini's music. Only 7km from Viareggio.
